In our present experimental mode, we need to create and pursue a few discussions, regardless of their content, so that we can see how they work, whether they will be archived, how they will be updated and presented to us, etc.
I confess I am also interested in filtering capabilities: by topic, date, and--especially--by who has posted a message. (The ability to filter e-mail has enabled me to stay out of the worst exchanges on the RiskAnal list because I simply did not receive any messages from certain people.)
As I write this message, I see that we can "tag" messages with key words to help us find them again: that augurs well for archival and search capabilities. I also see that we can attach files, which is something rarely allowed with list servers (to protect people from dangerous attachments).
What else are you looking for in terms of capabilities?

Typically, Steve, "friends" are people with access to certain reserved "private" information that you have contributed to your profile. I don't know the details of how Ning implements this. You will have to experiment!
